Four Benefits of CBD for Seniors
By Space Coast Daily // July 23, 2020
As we get older, we encounter new health-related hurdles that we may not have faced before or we begin to struggle to combat symptoms as quickly as we did in our youth. Similarly, we may find that the remedies we once used simply aren’t as effective anymore.
As a result, we may find ourselves seeking out new resources to combat these conditions and their symptoms. One of these increasingly popular remedies is cannabidiol (CBD).
Here are four ways CBD use can benefit you and your health as a senior:
1. Easing pain
Muscle pains, joint stiffness, and bone weakness are all a natural – albeit unpleasant – part of the aging process. However, certain studies have indicated that cbd arthritis cream can aid in easing such pain, especially lower back pain caused by inflammation or arthritis.
For example, one study examining rats found that oral CBD treatment significantly reduced sciatic nerve pain and inflammation. Similarly, another rat study found that CBD injections reduced their pain response to surgical incision.
2. Reducing anxiety
Like any other demographic, senior citizens can suffer from anxiety and other mental health issues. As we age, we experience new challenges, which can feel daunting and overwhelming. These new experiences, such as loss of independence, end-of-life planning, and grief, can act as common triggers for anxiety in older adults.
Fortunately, CBD products may be able to ease such anxiety in seniors. Some studies have found that CBD can help to adjust your brain receptors and their connection with serotonin, the feel-good chemical that also promotes relaxation in the body.
3. Treating sleep disorders
A lack of sleep can wreak havoc on a senior’s physical and mental wellbeing, making it all the more concerning that such conditions are common in older populations. High doses of CBD, however, can act as a sleep aid, certain studies suggest.
One study found that, in comparison to a placebo, a CBD dosage of 160 milligrams increased sleep duration among participants.
Another investigation found that participants’ cortisol levels – also known as the stress hormone – decreased when they had 300 or 600 mg of CBD oil. This gave researchers reason to believe that CBD impacts the release of cortisol and possibly acts as a natural sedative.
4. Stimulating the appetite
Another common side effect of the natural aging process is a dwindling appetite. Of course, if a person doesn’t eat enough, this can deplete their energy levels, contribute to weight loss, tissue damage, and even mental issues.
While marijuana is well-known for stimulating the appetite – aka giving people “the munchies” – new studies are indicating that CBD has the same effect. In encouraging you to eat more, CBD can aid in regaining much-needed energy and muscle mass.
Tips for Beginners
As a senior, this may be your first time experimenting with CBD; a 2019 Gallup poll found that 49% of respondents over the age of 65 were not familiar with CBD products. That said, it’s never too late to try new things.
A couple of important steps to follow as a beginner include doing extensive research on CBD manufacturers by visiting their websites and consulting your doctor before trying any products.
You’ll also want to ensure you’re taking the correct dosage in order to reap the benefits of CBD. Oftentimes, beginners will under-dose and therefore fail to experience the same benefits. An excellent way of ensuring your dose of CBD oil is strong enough is to try an extra-strength product, which boasts high-purity CBD with no THC content.
If you’ve been searching for a new remedy to some of your day-to-day health issues, CBD may not have been the first thing to come to mind. However, with its growing popularity and its wide range of health benefits, CBD would be an excellent addition to any senior’s daily regime.
