BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA –  The Studios of Cocoa Beach, located at 165 Minuteman Causeway in downtown Cocoa Beach, has reopened and invite you to come in and view the work of its July Artist of the Month, Brean Duncan of Merritt Island.

Brean is an award-winning photographer as well as a career environmental scientist.

His understanding of natural ecosystems and the impact of human development drives him to capture unaltered landscapes and wildlife with a goal of preserving and sharing their beauty.

Brean Duncan feels at home in wild and scenic landscapes. Born in Santa Barbara, CA, he grew up surfing and rock climbing, and at the age of 15 hiked the John Muir Trail.

His passion for Geography and Ecology led to a Masters in Physical Geography from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a Ph.D. in Conservation Biology from the University of Central Florida.

He is currently an Ecological Program Manager and Chief Scientist at the John F. Kennedy Space Center Ecology Program

Brean was destined to be a photographer. His grandfather Preston Duncan was a successful movie industry and military photographer, who helped establish the photography department at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.

His knowledge was passed onto Brean’s father and Brean had the advantage of learning from both.

When Brean isn’t working as a scientist, he can usually be found photographing beautiful landscapes near and far from his home in Florida.

Through his photography, he hopes to impart the importance of conserving and protecting our few remaining wild landscapes and the organisms that inhabit them.

A print on metal of Brean’s flower portrait “Milkwort“ is the prize in the Studios’ free monthly giveaway. You can enter in person or click on the QR code displayed in the Studios window.

At this time, the Studios of Cocoa Beach is open for limited hours, Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 8 p.m, Saturday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and by appointment. This is subject to change, so call 321-613-3480 to confirm hours or make an appointment.
