BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – For Chief Warrant Officer 2 Tony Perez, writing a novel was something he always knew he was going to do someday.

Finding the time to actually sit down and write it out, however, proved to be somewhat of a bigger endeavor than he initially realized.

As it turned out, working full time as a defense contractor for one of the largest American defense technology companies — while simultaneously working part-time as a CID Special Agent in the U.S. Army Reserves — made this task more than a little bit challenging.

But surmounting difficult obstacles has never been a hindrance for the Florida native. In fact, Perez has always thrived under pressure, as his distinguished track record in serving the country clearly demonstrates.

Writing his debut novel, which was indirectly inspired during his two tours overseas, was the only logical next step for him.

Perez still remembers how he managed to fall head-over-heels in love with reading. His mother had been a fan of romance novels, and one day, she had spontaneously gifted the then-teenage boy a paperback.

He mistakenly thought it was just another one of her bodice-rippers, so he rested the novel on his bedside table and promptly proceeded to ignore it.

In fact, Perez hadn’t bothered to pick it up until one night he found himself with spare time and, not ready to go to bed, he reluctantly plucked the novel off his nightstand.

After scanning the back of the book, then flipping through the first few pages of it, he started to read it. He was instantly hooked.

Perez recalls, “It had me interested in the characters and what was happening to them. Needless to say, I think I finished it in about three weeks. And I found out that it was part of a series of books, so I asked my mom for the next book. We went to the bookstore together.”

And thus Perez’s love of reading was born. At just 15 years old, he knew that one day he was going to be an author, too. Tony told his mother this, not expecting much of a reaction from her.

As expected, Martha had nodded and offered him some encouraging words to motivate him but she never pressured him or nagged him about it. While it may have seemed like empty faith at the time, as it turns out, Martha had never doubted him. And this year, Perez’s finally going to be able to keep his promise to his mother.

As for the series that is credited for sparking his love of reading, he says fondly, “I read all of the books, about 30-something books, and I kept them all for years. I gave them to my daughter to read, too, and she loved it.”

What about the book that he wrote?

When probed for more information about where he got his inspiration for The Delta Mission, Perez merely smiles vaguely and says, “I have experienced a lot while serving in the military and while working as a contractor. I also currently have a Top-Secret clearance, of which I’ve had for over 20 years, and therefore have been exposed to significantly more than most people. Of course, I can’t reveal anything classified,” Perez’s smile widens into a grin, “but I have stories that are based on information that will give a glimpse of some of our technologies and capabilities, as well as the technologies and capabilities of foreign powers.”

It’s an intriguing premise and one that will be sure to enthrall readers. The Delta Mission follows the story’s protagonist, a Delta Force soldier by the name of James Chase, as he tries to survive seemingly insurmountable odds in enemy territory.

It’s guaranteed to keep the readers riveted from the first page to the very last, just as Perez was when he discovered his own love of reading.
