BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Category 1 Hurricane Isaias is moving slightly slower through the northern Bahamas Saturday morning before it descends upon southeast Florida tonight.

Brevard County remains under a Hurricane Warning.

Isaias is registering 80 mph max sustained winds and moving slightly slower to the northwest at 12 mph.

The National Hurricane Center is forecasting Hurricane Isaias to have a slower moving forward motion in the next day before it will impact east coast of Florida. Furthermore, experts are not projecting much change in Isaias’ strength through Sunday.

However, dangerous storm surge is still a concern as 2-4 feet storm surge is likely for Brevard County and most of the east coast of Florida.

Brevard County is projected to see between 2-4 inches rainfall accumulation.

Brevard County could see 75 mph max sustained winds by late Sunday night, heading into early Monday morning.

Earlier today, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced on Saturday that President Trump has approved his request for a pre-landfall emergency declaration for counties impacted by Isaias, including Brevard County.

“President Donald Trump has approved my request for a pre-landfall emergency declaration for the counties in the path of Hurricane Isaias. This will help our state respond quickly to any impacts from the storm,” said Gov. DeSantis.

A local State of Emergency has also been declared for Brevard County in response to the pending threat of Hurricane Isaias.

Local state of emergencies are declared in advance of a potential disaster event and enables government entities to readily seek response or recovery assistance from the state.

The emergency declaration will be signed by Brevard County Commission Vice-Chair Rita Pritchett, who is the appointed chair of the Policy Group, which consists of local, county, and state officials and is activated for emergencies.

An emergency declaration provides avenue for counties to expedite contractual procedures, rental of equipment, employment of permanent and temporary workers, acquisition of supplies, materials and facilities and appropriation and expenditure of public funds.

Gov. Ron DeSantis also declared a state of emergency on Friday.

SANDBAG DISTRIBUTION

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office along with the Board of County Commissioners and our Public Safety partners continue to monitor the storm projections of Hurricane Isaias.

As a result of a potential impact to Brevard County, the Sheriff’s Office will be distributing sandbags (at no cost) to our citizens, today and Saturday, at five different locations throughout Brevard County.

In an effort to expedite the process, we will be using inmate labor to fill and load the sandbags directly into our citizen’s vehicles at the five different locations.

This will be conducted under the direct supervision of the Sheriff’s Office employees. Each vehicle can obtain up to 10 free sandbags so they can help prepare and protect their homes and businesses.

The five locations will be open for distribution Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. or until supplies are gone.
