Titusville Man Arrested After Two-Hour Standoff With Police, Chokes Woman With Belt Before 911 Call

BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA – A Titusville man was arrested by police Friday afternoon after police responded to a 911 call about in-progress domestic disturbance at a residence located on the 3700 block of Militia Drive.

The suspect is identified as 59-year-old Gregory Allen Avery.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect snared a woman around her neck with his belt in an effort to choke her and destroyed her cell phone after she called the police for help.

Officers arrived on the scene around 12:15 p.m. when the suspect denied them entry to the residence and barricaded himself in the home.

Titusville Police S.W.A.T. Team and Crisis Negotiation Team were deployed to the residence when authorities recognized the critical situation at hand.

After two hours, negotiations by police resulted in the suspect exiting the home at approximately 2:30 p.m.

Avery was taken into custody without further incident, booked into the Brevard County Jail and is currently being held without bond.

He has been charged with Felony Domestic Battery with Choking and Witness Tampering.

The victim refused medical attention for her injuries, but was subsequently arrested on unrelated charges.
