YOUR OPINION: The Last Thing We Need is a ‘Firecracker’

Monique Miller: These times call for leaders that take a measured, reasoned approach
“Scientists agree that getting younger children back in school is best for their well-being”
The Florida Today Editorial Board endorsed Jennifer Jenkins for the District 3 school board seat. As I read the “endorsement,” though, it was increasingly apparent why the incumbent, Tina Descovich, should be reelected.
The key element in the endorsement for Tina’s opponent is that the School Board needs to listen more to teachers. I think not.
Scientists agree that getting younger children back in school is best for their well-being. Jenkins might represent the voice of some nervous teachers, but Descovich is doing what she has always done.
She listens to all parties, gathers information from scientists and other experts and makes an informed decision. She heard from students, parents, school staff, and yes, teachers.
These times call for leaders that take a measured, reasoned approach to decision-making in difficult situations. Just as Descovich did after the Parkland tragedy, she has demonstrated a commitment to rational thinking and common sense since COVID came into our lives.
Florida Today Editorial Board got their observations about the two candidates right. Jenkins was described as a “firecracker.”
We don’t need someone that will make knee-jerk reactions, based on feelings brought on by a tragedy. Descovich was described as experienced, fiscally responsible, knowledgeable about the issues and thoughtful. Those are the qualities that best serve Brevard.
Great analysis, Florida Today, but you came to the wrong conclusion. Tina Descovich is the School Board member and candidate that I endorse.
