Explosion originated from an industrial storage area containing 30-40 50-gallon barrels of an isopropyl alcohol-based solution

BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – City of Palm Bay first responders are currently working a reported chemical explosion at FAR Chemical Inc., which produces fine organics and intermediates that are used in pharmaceuticals, aerospace, coatings and adhesives, personal care, flavors and ingredients and many other applications.

Palm Bay Police and Fire Departments are working the scene of an explosion in the area of U.S. Highway 1 and RJ Conlan Boulevard in NE Palm Bay.

The explosion occurred shortly before 11 a.m.

“The cause of the explosion is under investigation, but Fire Rescue personnel have determined that the explosion originated from an industrial storage area containing 30-40 50-gallon barrels of an isopropyl alcohol-based solution,” said Palm Bay Public Information Officer Keely Leggett.

“Hazmat teams are on scene and have confirmed that the materials and resulting plume are non-toxic. One business was evacuated due to the explosion; however, no additional evacuations are required at this time.”

Palm Bay Fire Rescue has confirmed that the fire has been extinguished. Due to the industrial area, extra precautions are being taken to prevent hot spots and potential flare-ups.

Patrick Air Force Base has responded to the scene with their crash truck to assist the effort by spraying the area with a layer of retardant foam.

The Palm Bay Police Department temporarily closed U.S. Highway 1 and RJ Conlan Boulevard to traffic and residents before reopening the immediate area.
