BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – Earlier I was honored to be invited to attend the “Bridge Dedication” for Major General John Cleland and to also serve as a speaker during a “Bench Dedication” for Major General Cleland and his wife at the Veteran’s Memorial Center in Merritt Island.
John R. D. Cleland retired from the US Army in 1980, rising from the rank of private to Major General during his career.
Following military service, the championed veteran continued his service as president of the Cape Canaveral Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America, served in executive positions with the Florida Institute of Technology, Brevard Arts Council, Florida Tech School of Business and Eau Gallie Yacht Club.
Major General passed away in 2017 and will always be remembered for his bravery, determination and strong leadership during his service to our country and our community.
I was blessed through the years to know Major General Cleland and can tell you firsthand that he was an amazing man who never said “no” when it came to doing things for our community.
Thank you to everyone who made today’s dedications possible at the Major General John Cleland Memorial Bridge and also at the Veteran’s Memorial Center for all you did to honor a true American Hero.
