Brevard Public Schools Class of 2020 Graduates Delivered Excellence Amidst Challenging Year

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard Public Schools saw across the board increases in seniors earning various diplomas in the 2019-2020 academic year, despite the unprecedented challenges faced as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As the district awaits word from the state on its 2020-2021 graduation rates, this initial data is promising:
Scholar Diploma Designation
BPS had 947 students graduate with Scholar Diploma Designations in 2020 – a 35-percent increase from 2019.
In addition to meeting the 24-credit standard high school diploma requirements, a student must meet all of the following requirements to earn this designation:
■ Earn 1 credit in Algebra 2 or an equally rigorous course
■ Pass the Geometry End of Course (EOC) exam
■ Earn 1 credit in Statistics or an equally rigorous mathematics course
■ Pass the Biology 1 EOC*
■ Earn 1 credit in Chemistry or Physics
■ Earn 1 credit in a course equally rigorous to Chemistry or Physics
■ Pass the U.S. History EOC*
■ Earn 2 credits in the same World Language
■ Earn at least 1 credit in an AP, IB, AICE or a dual enrollment course
*A student is exempt from the Biology 1 or U.S. History EOC assessment if the student is enrolled in an AP, IB or AICE Biology 1 or U.S. History course; takes the respective AP, IB or AICE assessment; and earns the minimum score to earn college credit.
Merit Diploma Designation
Students who graduated with an industry certification on the approved Department of Education list:
■ SY 2019 – BPS had 1125 students graduate with Merit Diploma Designation
■ SY 2020 – BPS had 1174 students graduate with Merit Diploma Designation
Students who graduated with both a Scholar Diploma Designation and a Merit Diploma Designation:
■ SY 2019 –358 students graduate with both designations
■ SY 2020 –637 students graduate with both designations
Gold Seal of Biliteracy (as defined in SA-1.09951)
■ SY 2019 – 286 students
■ SY 2020 – 323 students
Cambridge (AICE) Diploma
■ SY 2019 – BPS graduated 51 students with a complete Cambridge Diplomas
■ SY 2020 – BPS graduated 125 students with complete Cambridge Diplomas
International Baccalaureate Diploma
■ SY 2019 – BPS graduated 45 students with a full IB Diploma
■ SY 2020 – BPS graduated 92 students with a full IB Diploma
