Melbourne Police Seize Heroin, Fentanyl, Methamphetamine; Arrests Three in Search Warrant Operation

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Melbourne Special Investigations Unit, along with the SWAT team and patrol officers, arrested three suspects during a search warrant operation Thursday to target the sales of heroin, fentanyl and methamphetamine at 1711 Platt Street in South Melbourne.

According to Melbourne Police Lt. Scott Mostert, detectives seized 15 grams of methamphetamine, four grams of heroin, four grams of cocaine and two grams of cannabis – along with numerous items of drug paraphernalia – and arrested Joseph C. Washington, Frederick Monroe and James A. Whitford.

“The paraphernalia items included straws, baggies, spoons, digital scales, and smoking pipes, which all had residue on them that tested positive for different types of illegal drugs,” said Lt. Mostert.

Washington, 36, of Melbourne, was charged with violation of probation felony warrant reference possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm in commission of a felony, sale of cocaine, possession of cocaine with intent to sell and possession of cocaine.

Monroe, 52, who is “homeless,” was charged on a felony warrant. Whitford, 37, of Melbourne, was charged with possession of heroin.

The Melbourne Police Department Special Weapons and Tactics Team (S.W.A.T.) is a lifesaving unit with an emphasis on resolving incidents in the safest manner possible.

The primary duties of the team are high-risk warrant service and counter-narcotics operations.

The team has been involved in numerous joint operations with the Drug Enforcement Administration, United States Secret Service, Florida Department of Law Enforcement and local Law Enforcement agencies.
