Canine Commandos challenges the intellectual curiosity of BPS gifted students
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Brevard Public Schools Canine Commandos has been awarded $1,000 by the Petco Foundation as “Helping Heroes.”
The Petco Foundation has donated a total of $27,000 and Harris L3 also donated $2,500 to purchase supplies to help offset costs such as t-shirts and training supplies.
Canine Commandos challenges the intellectual curiosity of gifted students in Brevard Public Schools and enhances their empathy by working with shelter animals.
It helps students make sense of the world through critical examination, abstract reasoning, and insightful problem solving while nurturing their emotional intensity and development to help them understand and appreciate their unique sensitivities, emotions and passions.
Canine Commandos is in its 17th year teaching basic commands to all Brevard County animal shelters with a 60 percent successful adoption rate since the birth of the program.
Teaching commands to shelter dogs increases their chances of finding new homes as many of the dogs are overlooked for adoption due to lack of training, with 96 percent of all dogs relinquished have had zero training.
Last school year, 30 schools participated with Canine Commandos and the program continues to grow.
