BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Our Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit concluded an “overdose death” investigation that resulted in the arrest of the alleged drug source, 33-year-old Leslie Cadet of Melbourne, for First Degree Felony Murder and Delivery of a Controlled Substance.

The drug overdose death investigation actually began on May 20, 2020, when Deputies responded to a residence in unincorporated Melbourne Beach, regarding an unresponsive female who was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The victim was transported to the Brevard County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy where it was determined that her death was due to the ingestion of a lethal amount of fentanyl.

The Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit death investigation determined that Cadet delivered what the victims believed to be cocaine on the evening of May 20, 2020.

During the evening, the victim and an associate ingested the narcotics at which time both became unresponsive and the victim died. The crime scene investigation found a plastic baggie with unused drugs that tested positive for cocaine and fentanyl in the vicinity of where the victim was located.

As Homicide Agents continued to work the death investigation, Cadet was arrested on July 1, 2020, for guess what… trafficking in fentanyl, trafficking in cocaine, trafficking in MDMA and the Sale of Cocaine

. The arrest was pursuant to a drug investigation that began when Sheriff’s Agents received information that Cadet was selling cocaine from his residence.

Agents were able to make purchases of cocaine from Cadet at the residence located on Tropic Road, in Melbourne. Subsequent testing of the cocaine purchased from Cadet revealed it was laced with fentanyl as well.

On July 1, 2020, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team assisted agents with the execution of a search warrant, which resulted in the seizure of 97 grams of cocaine, 47 grams of MDMA and 7 grams of fentanyl. In addition to the drugs, 2 semi-automatic handguns and $4,600.00 US currency was seized.

As a result of the initial investigation and the search warrant executed by our SWAT Team, Cadet was taken to the Brevard County Jail Complex on a “No Bond” status with additional charges pending.

As a result of the death investigation, our Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit arrested Cadet again, this time though for the death of 54-year-old Teresa Varsen that had occurred in May when Cadet sold fentanyl to the unsuspecting victim and her associate!!

Cadet was arrested in the death case after an arrest warrant was issued by the Honorable Judge Kenneth Friedland charging him with First Degree Felony Murder and Delivery of a Controlled Substance.

Cadet was again taken to the Brevard County Jail as he had somehow got a significantly reduced bond after the “No Bond” arrest and was once again out on the street where he could further victimize our citizens.

Cadet is once again being held at the Brevard County Jail on a “No Bond” status for the death of Teresa Varsen and hopefully this time our legal system will not let him out on bond so he can victimize someone else.

As Sheriff, I am extremely proud of everyone involved in this investigation as they worked diligently to take this individual off our streets before he can harm anyone else!! Please join me in thanking all the agents in these investigations for their commitment to and protection of our citizens!
