BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – I am extremely honored that Junny and I could partner with The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) to champion this significant piece of legislation that was designed to protect Domestic Violence victims and their pets.
This past week Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed C.S./S.B. 1082 which will help keep people and pets together by ensuring family pets can be included in orders of protection from domestic violence.
With this new law, Florida joins more than 30 other states who have enacted meaningful public policies to safeguard both humans and pets from violence in the home.
Research indicates that up to 89 percent of pet-owning women who enter domestic violence shelters report that their abuser threatened, harmed, or even killed a family pet.
Additionally, as many as 48 percent of domestic violence survivors with pets, delay seeking safety, fearing what would happen if they left their pets behind. It is a known fact that under normal circumstances, adults, children, and pets living in an abusive home often face major obstacles to escape harm’s way.
Junny and I are extremely proud to have been a part of this strong piece of legislation that takes effect on July 1st., 2020.
A special thank you to ASPCA Senior Director of State Legislation, Jennifer Hobgood who worked closely with Sen. Ben Albritton (R-Bartow), and Representatives Sam Killebrew (R-Winter Haven) and David Silvers (D-West Palm Beach) as well as other Law Enforcement leaders to make this bill a reality.
As I always say… “it takes a community to protect a community” and this bill is just another great example of people coming together to protect everyone in our community, even our pets.
