The Patrick Air Force Base Fire Department recently conducted a live-fire training exercise on a simulated aircraft. “Once in a while you actually need it and it comes down to saving a life or saving a structure, that’s why we’re out here. It’s so if the real thing happens you’re not second-guessing, it’s an automatic response,” said the assistant chief of training, Michael Kennedy. (45th Space Wing image)

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Patrick Air Force Base Fire Department recently conducted a live-fire training exercise on a simulated aircraft.

The fire department’s assistant chief of training, Michael Kennedy, explained how simulated fire training provides practical experience for firefighters.

“The fire department is all about training,” said Kennedy.

“Once in a while you actually need it and it comes down to saving a life or saving a structure, that’s why we’re out here. It’s so if the real thing happens you’re not second-guessing, it’s an automatic response.”

Kennedy also stressed the importance of using live fire during exercises.

“When you actually feel the heat, and smoke starts to develop and come down, it gives you a practical experience,” Kennedy said.

“Being able to experience it hands-on gives you a better appreciation of what you’re doing, what the dangers are, and how important your crew is.”
