(NASA) – On December 15, 1965, NASA achieved its first rendezvous between two spacecraft.

Just hours after launching, Gemini VI-A (Stafford and Schirra) caught up with the already orbiting Gemini VII (Borman and Lovell).

The spacecraft got so close that Borman, a graduate of West Point, could read Naval Academy graduates, Stafford and Schirra’s “Beat Army” sign.
