BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Brevard Youth Chorus has continued to sing through the Covid-19 pandemic, albeit from completely separate locations.

After weeks of remote rehearsals, the group of singers in grades 4-10 has released their Virtual Holiday Concert on Youtube, with merged recordings of holiday favorites, “Up on the Housetop,” “Angels We Have Heard on High” and “O Little Town of Bethlehem.”

Adult members of the Indialantic Chamber Singers joined the chorus for “Silent Night.” Membership in the non-profit chorus is open to students in public, private, charter, and home-schools.

The chorus will continue its remote learning format through the spring. For more information, contact director Joani Slawson at BrevardYouthChorus@gmail.com or call (321) 432-2770.

The virtual format got easier as the weeks went by, with Ms. Slawson checking in with each student individually after the weekly group Zoom rehearsals.

“We usually would start the rehearsals with a little time for the kids to catch up with each other,” said Slawson.

“Then we would rehearse together, although they couldn’t hear each other at all! They would sing along with me or a rehearsal track. But they learned their parts and had fun along the way. We owe a big thank you to one of our young members, Chris DeMuro, who took all the individual recordings and put together our virtual concert.”

Most years, the select group of youngsters performs at venues and events throughout Brevard.

Recent performances include the Family Concert with the Brevard Symphony Orchestra at the King Center, Viera, Cocoa Beach and Indialantic holiday concerts with the Indialantic Chamber Singers and more.
