Owens resigned as the Space Coast head coach in 2017 to take some time from coaching but returned in 2020 to coach at Merritt Island as an assistant

Owens takes over for Dwayne Byrd who resigned as the Palm Bay head coach in December to spend more time with family.

Byrd finished with a combined overall record of 3-14 in two seasons with the Pirates.
