BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The National Honor Society (NHS) has announced that Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy senior Ellen Choi has been selected as an NHS Scholarship semifinalist.

Choi was one of only 575 semifinalists chosen from nearly 10,000 applicants to receive a $3,200 scholarship toward her higher education.

In addition to the NHS distinction, Choi has earned numerous additional academic honors and accolades over her high school career including being named a National Merit Semifinalist and a National AP Scholar. Most recently, she was selected to be Holy Trinity’s Class of 2021 valedictorian.

A gifted violinist, Choi has played with the Brevard Symphony Youth Orchestra (BSYO) since the 7th grade and was awarded first place for the Annual BSYO Concerto Competition as a 9th grader. She is a member of Holy Trinity’s Chamber Ensemble. She is also a member the Varsity Girls Golf Team and serves as a Board Leader with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).

Choi has spent the past year as a remote learner at Holy Trinity.

Never one to accept that her senior year would be quashed by pandemic circumstances, she used the experience to form an “association” of fellow remote learners to connect with student life and activities on campus.

Additionally, she took steps last summer to earn grants to form partnerships with Brevard’s Dorcas Outreach Center for Kids and Sarah’s Covent Homes of India to connect fellow remote students with COVID-friendly service opportunities. She formed her own organization, Buddies United to Dream (BUD), and recruited more than 40 high school students to become personal pen-pals and tutors for under-resourced students around the world.

“Ellen is a stand-out member of her senior class, an exceptional academic scholar, and a passionate community servant. She is more than deserving of this prestigious distinction and scholarship,” said Holy Trinity President Dr. Katherine Cobb.

“As a school whose mission it is to educate the whole child – mind, body and spirit – Ellen is a shining example of this fundamental approach to learning and the promising outcomes it can achieve. We can’t wait to see what she does next!”

While Choi has not yet decided where she will attend college in the fall, she is confident she will major in neuroscience with the goal of becoming a lawyer.

Since 1946, more than $19 million in scholarships have been awarded to outstanding NHS senior members to support college access and student success. The scholarship program is supported by the parent organization of NHS, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
