Officer shot point-blank in the back of the head

WATCH: Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivery appeared on Newsmax TV this week to discuss the killing of a New Mexico State Police officer during a Feb. 4 traffic stop.

Bodycam and dashcam footage captured a suspected drug dealer gun down the police officer during the incident.

Sheriff Ivey reacted to what is currently known about the case and comments on the dangers of policing in the age of “defund the police.”

The New Mexico State Police officer was caught by surprise when 39-year-old Omar Felix Cueva fired an AR-15 style rifle at least once at officer Darian Jarrott across the pickup truck’s bed and then fatally shot Jarrott after he ducked and fell.

As Cueva ran toward the front of the truck on the passenger’s side, he shot Jarrott point-blank in the back of the head.

Cueva fatally shot Jarrott after being pulled over on Interstate 10 west of Las Cruces. Cueva later died in a shootout with other officers after a pursuit.
