BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – On the first day of a special week-long Covid vaccination clinic created for Brevard students 12-and older, an appointment confirmation list more than 250-strong kept Health First clinicians … in collaboration with local Brevard teacher “ambassadors” …. very busy through the 4-hour window.

As Brevard County students ages 12- and up begin looking toward summer fun (and even the new school year), this special vaccination clinic was created just for them starting today, helping parents to protect their kids and give them peace of mind.

As part of this special week, a team of local teachers volunteered to serve as on-site “ambassadors” for these vaccination clinics – helping to answer questions, calm jittery kids (and parents), and help reinforce the message that a vaccinated student can safely head into the summer and new school year with confidence.

As Brevard County students ages 12- and up begin looking toward summer fun (and even the new school year), this special vaccination clinic was created just for them starting today, helping parents to protect their kids and give them peace of mind.

“We know how important it is for many of our students to go back to a physical school and be able to learn and socialize with their peers in person,” said Jessica Maynor, Health First System Director of Staffing and Director of Vaccine Services.

“Being able to provide students 12- and up the opportunity to be vaccinated is important to our whole community.”

Even though kids are less likely to suffer the serious health effects that have plagued adults stricken with COVID-19, being immunized with a vaccine that is 95% effective goes beyond protecting them, but the people they are in contact with.

“Being vaccinated can seriously reduce the risk of these teens unknowingly passing an asymptomatic infection to those they interact with – their family members, teachers, coaches and more,” Maynor said.

“The more people who are vaccinated, the closer we come to slowing the spread of this virus.”

Even though kids are less likely to suffer the serious health effects that have plagued adults stricken with COVID-19, being immunized with a vaccine that is 95% effective goes beyond protecting them, but the people they are in contact with.

While some parents may be concerned with having their children or themselves immunized with a new vaccine, they should take comfort in knowing complications are extremely rare.

With all of the social distancing, masking, hand hygiene and other measures we’ve taken to avoid getting or spreading COVID-19, getting vaccinated is one more critical step. There might be some mild side effects – such as a sore arm, fatigue, fever, a headache, etc. – but that’s a tradeoff for the protection that comes with being immunized.

“We’ve provided more than 41,000 COVID-19 vaccinations so far and have had no reports of severe adverse reactions,” Maynor said, or about 1 in 6 Brevard County residents who have received a COVID-19 vaccine shot, according to summary data presented here.
