Parrish Healthcare Partners with Brevard Sheriff’s Office, Titusville Police for DEA Take Back Event

Public can bring expired, unwanted or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances
BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA – On Saturday, April 24, 2021, Parrish Medical Center partnered with the Brevard County Sherriff’s Office, Titusville Police Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration to serve as a collection point for the national DEA take-back event.
This semiannual event provided an opportunity for law enforcement, prevention, treatment, and business communities to collaborate and establish a safe collection site for all community members.
“We know that one of the many opportunities for abuse and accidental overdoses exists from expired and unused prescription medications in people’s own homes.
Drugs that are improperly disposed of usually end up in our water systems or landfills and are extremely harmful to the environment,” said BCSO Public Information Officer Tod Goodyear.
“BCSO is proud to partner in a campaign that brings awareness to these concerns and provides the public with safe and secure disposal sites for these medications.”
During this national take-back event community members were able to surrender expired, unwanted, or unused pharmaceutical controlled substances and other medications to law enforcement officers for destruction.
In the four hours of the event, officers were able to gather two boxes of unused and expired medications removing a total of 56 pounds of drugs from our community’s circulation.
“The DEA Takeback Day gives us the opportunity twice a year to make our community a safer place for our families. Parrish Medical Center’s participation in this effort underscores our commitment to the support of the wonderful place we all call home!” said Parrish Medical Center Director of Pharmacy Eric Renker.
