BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – The Palm Bay Police Department’s Sylvia Fels was honored as the month of May Volunteer Cop of the Month.
Sylvia moved from New York to Florida when her husband’s job relocated him, and not one to sit at home, she bought and operated a print shop for 22 years.
Unfortunately, tragedy struck her family and she lost her husband and children all in a short time. She relied on her faith to bring her through that difficult time and now she often finds herself walking others through the grief process.
Sylvia is passionate about reaching out to the seniors of the community by providing a place where they can go to be encouraged, meet new people, and try new things.
As the second vice president of the Palm Bay Senior Center, she organizes a wide range of activities, and just recently, the center sponsored a COVID vaccine clinic specifically for seniors.
This former Spanish teacher also enjoys reading, sewing, traveling and cooking.
When she first heard about the VCOP program she found it intriguing – and another way she could engage with people. Her favorite thing about the job is meeting the wide variety of people that come in the front door.
Sylvia has worked at the police department’s front desk and designed the VCOP brochure, but mostly you’ll find her doing whatever needs to be done in the administration area.
If you would like to become a VCOP like Sylvia and meet new people, send an email to VCOP@palmbayflorida.org or call 321-953-8987.
