On Tuesday at USSSA Space Coast Complex in Viera there will be an outstanding lineup of speakers at a fundraiser/rally in support of Master Sergeant Mike Sonnenschein. One of the key speakers at the event will be Dave “Boon” Benton.

Benton recently talked with the Friday Night Locker Room’s Steve Wilson about Benghazi, the fundraiser and more in an exclusive interview.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – On Tuesday at USSSA Space Coast Complex in Viera there will be an outstanding lineup of speakers at a fundraiser/rally in support of Master Sergeant Mike Sonnenschein.

Sonnenschein and his wife, Hope, were attacked by a gunman while heading to their home in Haiti, where they had been serving as missionaries for five years.

Sonnenschien suffered multiple severe injuries and is currently at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia, where he is undergoing intensive physical therapy.

One of the key speakers at the June 22 event will be Dave “Boon” Benton.

If the name sounds familiar, it is because Boon was a part of the CIA annex security team that responded to the terrorist attack known as “Benghazi.”

The security team fought the terrorists for 13 hours and are credited with saving over 20 lives. Boon’s character was depicted in the book, “13 Hours in Benghazi” and the movie, “13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi.”

During the interview, Boon described how he always wanted to serve his country. He said, as a kid “I grew up watching G.I. Joe and watching John Wayne movies.” He chuckled and said, “I didn’t know any better!”

When asked what comes to mind when he hears the word, “Benghazi,” Boon’s reply was, “This might sound strange, but for me personally, it was just business. It was another bad day.”

He continued by saying “I really don’t dwell on it too much. I was just doing my job. We have been put in situations like this hundreds of times, so it really, it was just another bad day.”

Boon talked about the accuracy of the book and the movie. He feels like the book is 100 percent accurate. It was written from the perspective of some of those that were on the ground.

He said that the movie, on the other hand, “was probably about 75-80 percent correct.” Boon went on to say that some of the characters had been changed or altered, but, for the most part, the “events were accurate.”

WATCH: Mike Sonnenschein is a retired Army Ranger with impeccable credentials and is a true American Hero. Last May, the Sonnenschein’s were ambushed by an attacker. Mike sustained a gunshot wound and sustained serious injuries to his lung and spinal column. An upcoming event set for June 22 at the USSSA Space Coast Complex in Viera will raise funds to go to Sonnenschein and his family.

Not only will Boon be speaking at the fundraiser on Tuesday, but he will also be involved with a rather unique raffle.

Those attending the event may purchase raffle tickets, with the prize being a day of personal firearms tactics and training from Boon. This type of training is an area in which Boon currently specializes. There will be two winners drawn for this raffle.

Designed to offset medical expenses, the fundraiser features a remarkable slate of speakers.

In addition to Boon, presenters include Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey; Col. (Ret.) Danny McKnight, of Blackhawk Down fame; Lt. Col. (Ret.) Tim Thomas, current instructor for the Viera High School Army JROTC program and longtime friend of Sonnenschein; Donn Weaver, Chairman of the Brevard Veterans Council and Vice President of the Brevard Veterans Memorial Center; Shannon Newton, Sonnenschein’s sister-in-law; and Pastor Dave Barnes and Pastor T.J. Buckingham of Calvary Chapel.
