320-Acre Prescribed Fire Scheduled for Pine Island Conservation Area in Merritt Island

A 320-acre prescribed fire within the Pine Island Conservation Area is planned from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 10 by Brevard County’s Environmentally Endangered Lands Program with assistance from the University of Central Florida’s Landscape & Natural Resources Program.

BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – A 320-acre prescribed fire within the Pine Island Conservation Area is planned from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 10 by Brevard County’s Environmentally Endangered Lands Program with assistance from the University of Central Florida’s Landscape & Natural Resources Program.

The Pine Island Conservation Area is located at 2100 Pine Island Road in Merritt Island.

The burn will be conducted in the northwest corner of the property.

Prescribed fires involve the careful application of fire by professionals under specific weather and fuel conditions to achieve environmental resource management goals.

Benefits include the reduction of wildfire risk, habitat restoration and the recycling of nutrients back into the soil.
