As a college student, your education keeps you quite busy. In between assignments, seminars, tests, and extracurricular activities, you don’t even have enough time for yourself — let alone for someone else.

However, choosing a volunteer project to work on is beneficial not only to others but also to yourself. Asides from the kindness you will be showing to a total stranger, this project would look good on your resume.

While others might choose whether they want to volunteer on projects or not, these tasks are mandatory for students who study social work. After each activity, these social work students are required to write essays about community service to describe their experiences.  These essays are expected to inspire other students to participate in these activities. You don’t have to be a social work student — or wait till you read essay examples, to participate in these activities because giving back to your community is a great way to spend your time.

Listed below are some community projects you can do during your college years.

Animal Rescue Volunteer

If you love animals, then this is a great option for you. Animal shelters need extra hands to help clean cages, walk dogs, feed them, and organize adoption events.

Your schedule here is not rigid, and you hold the choice on how many hours you want to put in each day — or each week, depending on how busy you are with other things. These animal shelters are doing a lot for stray, lost, and unclaimed dogs; it will be nice to give them a hand.

Nursing Home Volunteer

This is among the top choices of community service activities for college students. Sometimes the relatives of the people in these homes do not visit as often as they like, and the elderly get lonely. You can change that.

If you take time out of your busy schedule every week to spend time with them, read books to them, and do other fun activities, you ensure that these people do not feel forgotten.

Now, this is a great activity that can later become a job. What’s a better way to understand a topic better than teaching it to someone else? By sharing your knowledge on a particular subject with other students like you, you are helping not only them but the community at large.

Timing is your choice, and it doesn’t matter how few the hours you put in are. As long as you are doing it, it will make a difference.

Crisis Counselor

Who better understands the stress of university than other university students? This is probably one of the most hands-on community service projects for students.

Academic stress has risen more in this era than the previous one, bullies are walking around campus, and the mental health of students is taking a deep dive. This is the best time to join other social work students in making sure all hands are on deck. Students need help now, more than ever.

If you provide a sounding board for students, it makes all this stress easier on them and makes them feel like they can get by. What’s a better way to help?

Help in Environmental Projects

Pollution contributes greatly to a number of problems we see around us, and you can lessen that by cleaning community beaches, parks, or other areas around you and other similar activities. You can do it yourself or organize a small group to make it even easier and faster.

Take time out on weekends, pick up your cleaning equipment, and work. You can start small, like picking up trash by the side of the road, then gradually cleaning a park and peeling posters off the walls. You can inspire people from your community to join in.

It might be tough at first, making up time from your busy schedule, but it gets easier the longer you stay on track. Helping people has a way of making you feel better about yourself, and at the end of the day, you will gain a lot of experience and help to make the world a better place.
