Brevard County’s Caroline Marks Advances to Surfing Semi-Finals at Tokyo Olympics

TOKYO, JAPAN – Brevard County native Caroline Marks advanced to the semi-final round after scoring 12.50 in heat two of the women’s shortboard quarter-finals.

Marks defeated Costa Rican surfer Brisa Hennessy who finished with a score of 6.83.

Marks will face off against South Africa’s Bianca Buitendag in Heat 1 of the semi-final round at 12:00 a.m ET on Tuesday, pending weather conditions.

Team USA’s Carissa Moore defeated Brazil’s Silvana Lima with a score of 14.26 in heat 3.

With the two American representatives advancing to the semi-finals, this sets up a potential finals matchup between Marks and Moore.

Marks represents Team USA of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics women’s surfing event at Tsurigasaki Beach. Carissa Moore, also representing USA and Marks’ teammate, made easy work in her heat by winning her heat with a total score of 14.26 to advance to the semi-finals. By age 16, Marks’ career was already the stuff of surfing legends. At 11, this goofy-footed ‘tween was the youngest girl to make the USA Surf Team. She is also the youngest female ever to surf in a World Surfing League Women’s Pro event.

Marks was also the youngest inductee into the Space Coast Sports Hall of Fame at age 14.
