BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA (WESH) – A massive amount of tiny fish are washing up dead in Brevard County, and state officials say a type of blue-green algae is to blame.

The clusters of dead minnows were found along Crane Creek in downtown Melbourne. Leesa Souto with the Marine Resources Council, which works to improve water quality along the Indian River, went to the site Monday to take samples and look for an explanation for the fish kill.

“We are looking at probably hundreds of thousands, if not millions of tiny little fish here,” Souto said.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating as well and told WESH 2 it was not caused by red tide.
