puts TDO on a track to exceed $14 million in total budget this year

PETER CRANIS: The May Tourist Development Tax came in Tuesday after the long weekend and it generated fireworks rivaling July 4th. The final number was $1.653 million – a 97% improvement over May 2020 and a 25.5% improvement over May 2019.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The May Tourist Development Tax came in Tuesday after the long weekend and it generated fireworks rivaling July 4th.

The final number was $1.653 million – a 97% improvement over May 2020 and a 25.5% improvement over May 2019.

This makes it the most successful May in TDT history and puts us on a track to exceed $14 million in total budget this year (assuming we hit our budget numbers for the remaining 4 months – more on that later).

Let’s break it down a bit.  Year to date, TDT this year is at $10.178 million compared to $9.11 million in 2020.  It is still below the $10.8 million in 2019 and $10.6 million in 2018 but is catching up fast based on the current trends.

Since the recovery began starting in March, our March to May period was at $5.3 million.  This is compared to $4.9 million in 2019 and $4.5 million in 2018, making it our best March-May in history.

If we finish out the year at 2019 levels for June – Sept., our total TDT will land just under $15.5 million.  In 2019, we just exceeded $16 million for the year and in 2018, we were just below $15.6 million so we could be really close to exceeding 2018.

While I think it is unlikely we will hit 2019 levels, there is a scenario where we could continue to exceed each remaining month by 10% over 2019 levels that could get us very close to 2019.

Looking at TDT by type, vacation rentals still are showing popularity, representing 31% of TDT for the month and 36.4% of TDT year to date.

Hotels represented 67.8% of the total for the month and 61.7% year to date.  In terms of cities, Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral (42.6%) are still exceeding Melbourne and the Beaches (40%) as a percentage of the total.

Now, on to Summer!  We already know June did very well and we are waiting for final STR numbers, as well as Vacation Rental data to do our monthly estimate – a topic for a future newsletter for sure.
