BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – American Legion Auxiliary Unit 200 in Satellite Beach presented their first annual Lola Tarrants Scholarship to Alexis Schuffert of Merritt Island High School.
Schuffert was chosen to represent Unit 200 in 2020 at the annual Girls State event held every year in Tallahassee. High School Juniors apply to their local American Legion Auxiliary and go through an interview process.
“Units chose candidates who then attend orientation with a parent before traveling to the State Capital with other young ladies chosen throughout the State,” said American Legion Auxiliary Unit 200’s Cheryl Rector.
Girls State is a week-long educational workshop sponsored by the Florida American Legion Auxiliary that teaches the political process and focuses on Americanism.
After this experience, the young ladies have a better understanding of the functioning of government and how citizens play a role in the democratic ideals of our country.
Unfortunately, the 2020 Girls State experience was canceled due to the Covid-19 outbreak and restrictions.
“Schuffert was an outstanding candidate for the experience and the Auxiliary Unit felt with her qualifications and academic history that she should be the first recipient of the newly created Unit Scholarship,” said Rector.
Schuffert will be attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with a major in Homeland Security.
After obtaining her degree, she plans to enlist in the United States Military Services. She received a certificate and check for $1,000 to assist her with her first-year educational expenses.
Unit 200 will be accepting applications for next year’s Girl State beginning in September. High school junior girls who are interested in government, politics, law, or any of the military branches are encouraged to apply.
