BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – I had the opportunity this week to visit with all of our Brevard County School Resource Deputies and Officers during their Back To School Training session at the Brevard Public Schools Administration Building in Viera.

I was joined at the training session by Cocoa Police Chief Evander Collier, Melbourne Police Chief David Gillespie, School Board Superintendent Mark Mullins, and School Board Member Misty Belford as we all welcomed these amazing men and women back for another school year.

I am extremely proud of our School Resource Deputies and Officers for the job they do, as they are without question the single greatest resource we have in getting to kids before they get to us.

I personally believe and am committed to the fact that our School Resource Deputies and Officers partnered together with our teachers and faculty, are the best chance we have to not only lower our crime rate in the future, but to save the next kid from drugs, the next kid from being bullied, the next kid from being killed in a shooting, the next kid from child abuse, and the next kid from taking their own life because of mental health.

If you ask them they will tell you that they are just doing their jobs to keep our schools, our children, and our teachers safe, but in reality, they are far more than that as they may very well be one of the most important resources we have in keeping our community and our children safe.

Please join me in thanking these amazing law enforcement officers for their dedication and commitment to serving our children and our Brevard Public Schools.

– Sheriff Wayne Ivey
