BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Brevard Zoo is partnering with Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience, and the University of Florida to expand the Indian River Lagoon Clam Project.

The current conditions in the lagoon have made oyster restoration north of 520 a bit challenging but many of these areas are still great clam habitat.

Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience is a full-time University of Florida research center for biomedical research and biotechnology located in St. Augustine, Florida.

Founded in 1974, the Whitney Lab is dedicated to using marine model animals for studying fundamental problems in biology and applying that knowledge to issues of human health, natural resources, and the environment.

Researchers at the lab are on the front lines of a variety of scientific areas including biodiversity, ocean health, marine chemistry, neuroscience, sensory biology, evolutionary genomics, embryology, and cell regeneration.

The ‘super’ clam project is hoping to install 100 different clam beds across Brevard this fall.
