How Americans Can Feel at Home in the UK
By Space Coast Daily // August 16, 2021
A few home comforts can make you feel more relaxed in a different country. If you’re planning a vacation to the UK or relocating on a temporary or permanent basis, you might want to embrace food, drinks, and experiences that remind you of your home nation. If so, read the following advice on how Americans can feel at home in the UK.
Join an Ex-pat Community
If you don’t have any friends or family living in the UK, it might help to find and join an ex-pat community. It will allow you to connect with other ex-pats, including many people from the United States. Hearing a familiar voice might make you feel more at home in a foreign country, and you could even form friendships with people from the same culture or background.
Experience a Taste of Home
The good news is, you don’t need to go far to enjoy a little taste of home in the UK, as the country is partial to American cuisine. However, if you’re looking for authentic dishes that will trigger memories from your hometown, you might need a dig a little further.
One venue worth your time and money is Annie’s Burger Shack, which offers authentic American cuisine, such as burgers inspired by state cuisines, from The Boston Nibbler to The Maryland Crabcake. Plus, you haven’t lived until you try the Annies Burger Shack Derby Breakfast Menus, which offers everything from Maine Blueberry Pancakes to homemade biscuits and gravy.
Learn About UK Life
Despite speaking the same language, the UK and the US have different cultures, traditions, and etiquettes. Familiarizing yourself with how UK life works will help you feel more comfortable, as it can prevent cultural faux pas or etiquette mistakes.
For example, the British have polite manners and will often say “please,” “thank you,” and “I’m sorry.” If you fail to use them when placing an order or asking for help, you might be viewed as rude.
Look Out for US Sports
The UK occasionally plays hosts to various football and basketball games, which you should keep a close eye on. For instance, NBA games have been hosted in London’s O2 Arena in the past, so you could catch the New York Knicks, Washington Wizards, or another basketball team in an English city soon.
Plus, the NFL recently announced it would return to the UK this year for their International Series. You can grab tickets at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for Atlanta Falcons v New York Jets (October 10) or the Jacksonville Jaguars v Miami Dolphins (October 17).
Make British Tea the Right Way
Tea is a big part of British tradition. Avoid sticking out like a sore thumb by learning to make a cup the right way. The Brits follow various strict rules when it comes to making tea. After asking if a person takes tea with milk and sugar, you must boil the water in a kettle and don’t heat it like Americans.
Also, you must never add the teabag to the water, as it can prevent it from brewing property. Instead, you must place the teabag and sugar if requested in the cup first and allow it to brew for a minute or two or a little longer if a person likes it strong. Next, add the milk, stir, and serve.
