OBITUARY: Betty Brubaker, Formerly of Merritt Island and Viera, Passed Away at Age 91

Betty Brubaker, 91 formerly of Merritt Island/Viera passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 29, 2020. Betty was born in 1929 to Vollie and Erma Housman in rural Miami, Oklahoma. She was the fourth of five children (Jehu, Wanda, Gerald, Betty and Mary) and a member of the Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma.

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Betty Brubaker, 91 formerly of Merritt Island/Viera passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 29, 2020. Betty was born in 1929 to Vollie and Erma Housman in rural Miami, Oklahoma. She was the fourth of five children (Jehu, Wanda, Gerald, Betty and Mary) and a member of the Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma.

She graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1947 and married her first husband, Ronald Dry in 1949.

They moved to Brevard County in 1966 where Ron was Brevard’s Exxon distributor. After Ron’s retirement, they enjoyed traveling around the U.S. and Canada in their motorhome.

After an extended illness, Ron passed away in 1996. In 2002 she married Joseph D. Brubaker Jr. CDR USN (RET) and moved to the Indian River Colony Club.

She is survived by her husband, her daughter Pamela Dry of Ponte Vedra Beach, and son Durwood Dry (Ronda) of Ocala. Stepchildren include Carole (Ken) Van Holbeck, John (Cindylu) Brubaker, Joseph D. Brubaker III, David (Dawn) Brubaker, and Joanne (David) Batchelor.

Her sister Mary (Wayne) Draper will surely miss her. She will also be missed by her 12 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Betty was an active member of the Cocoa Presbyterian Church Martha’s Circle and enjoyed joining her husband delivering Meal on Wheels. She was loved by all who knew her. She had strong political convictions, loved the American flag, and was a true American Patriot.

Betty’s ashes were interred in the family plot at the Ottawa Indian Cemetery in Miami, OK on May 15, 2021, where Ottawa Burial Rites were administered.

A memorial service to honor Betty’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on August 28, 2021, at the Cocoa Presbyterian Church 1404 Dixon Blvd. Cocoa, Florida 32922. A reception will follow the service.
