Tropical Storm Fred Forms in Caribbean, Expected to Impact Florida on Saturday

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – Tropical Storm Fred has formed in Caribbean on Wednesday, located about 20 miles south-southeast of the Dominican Republic, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Fred is currently carrying 45 max sustained winds and is moving toward the west-northwest near 16 mph.

A west-northwestward motion, with a decrease in forward speed, is expected to continue for the next few days.

The center of Fred is expected to be near or over Hispaniola this afternoon and evening, move near the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southeastern Bahamas on Thursday, and move over the north of the northern coast of central Cuba on Friday.

The system is expected to weaken later today and tonight as the center of Fred crosses Hispaniola.

Fred will then begin slowly re-intensify beginning Thursday night.

National Hurricane Center mentions that the rainfall for Fred will be felt in Florida through Monday as forecasts project 3-5 inches of rain across the Keys and southern Florida peninsula, with isolated area receiving as much as 8 inches of accumulative rainfall.

This heavy rainfall could lead to flash, urban, and small stream flooding, along with possible rapid river rises.

Fred is not expected to become a hurricane.
