BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Twenty-six volunteers collected 240 pounds of trash during the International Coastal Cleanup event on September 18 at Ballard Park.

Volunteers filled 12 bags of trash they found hiding in the rocks, around picnic areas, and along the Indian River Lagoon shoreline.

The largest amount of trash was found, but the smallest items were microplastics at 319 pieces and cigarette butts at 267 pieces.

The City of Melbourne thanks all of their volunteers for their hard work and dedication.

They give a big thanks to Jennifer Thompson with Brevard County Natural Resource Management for helping check-in volunteers and consolidating the collected trash, and to Dunkin’ Donuts and Publix for donating breakfast and snacks.
