BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Melbourne Police Department and Community Partners to hold Kid’s Fishing Clinic on Saturday, October 2.

The event will take place at Ballard Park located at 924 Thomas Barbour Drive.

This event is free to all children from 5 years to 15 years of age. Parents must accompany children for the duration of the event. There will be two-time slots at 9 a.m or 11 a.m.

The purpose of this event is to bring the community together in an effort to promote the outdoors as well as the unique ecosystem that is the Indian River Lagoon.

Inspire children to take up a hobby that involves the outdoors while participating in the following learning environments:

1. Knot tying which includes safety and how-to tie an improved clinch knot and uni-knot.
2. Tackle station that explains rods and reels, what should be in your tackle box, first aid and sun protection, regulations and hats, and sun-glasses for safety.
3. Good Angler-conservation topics to include regulations, habitat preservation, catch and release and police your trash.
4. Where Fish Live- fish habitat, what fish eat, what happens if we lose that habitat, and respect all wildlife.
5. Casting- be aware of your surroundings, casting instruction and demonstration, cast into hula-hoops, and proper handling while to and from fishing areas.

Melbourne Police Department’s goal is to:

■ To promote community relations between officers and families.
■ To build relationships with youth through positive law enforcement interaction.
■ To provide a hobby for children to enjoy the outdoors, understand the community they live in and help to reduce their carbon footprint.
