OBITUARY: Barbara Slack Carey, 79, of Viera, Passed Away on September 24

Barbara was a Woman of the Moose of St. Augustine Chapter 1101
BREVARD COUNTY • VIERA, FLORIDA – Barbara Slack Carey, 79, found her wings on September 24, 2021, in Viera, Florida. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Leon Henry Slack, Jr. and Joseph Stanley Carey.
Barbara Slack Carey was a strong, outspoken woman, loving mother, and devoted wife. She was born in Davenport, Iowa to the late Lois and Elphage Lalonde on August 26, 1942.
After graduating high school, she entered the U.S. Navy and was sent to New York. It was there she met her first husband, Leon Slack.
As a typical military family, Barbara and Leon traveled throughout the US and abroad. They finally settled in St. Augustine, Florida where they made many lasting friendships. She lost Leon after 29 years of marriage.
Barbara became a Woman of the Moose of St. Augustine Chapter 1101 and accomplished many things. She earned her Academy of Friendship and Past Regent degrees and the College of Regents honor.
One of her greatest accomplishments was visiting Mooseheart, Illinois, the Child City that is a home for children and teens in need. She spent many hours volunteering and raising money for this organization.
While visiting Oregon, Barbara reunited with her High School sweetheart, Stan Carey, and their love story began again. They were married for 22 incredibly happy years.
Barbara leaves behind 3 children, Leon Slack (Marilyn), Michelle Haller (Christopher), and Bobby Slack (Stephanie), 6 grandchildren, Matthew Oh-Slack, Kaitlin and Peyton Slack, Donald, Tina, and Rachel Haller, and 3 great-grandchildren. She chose to not have a service, but to be remembered with friends over a drink and a laugh.
