BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Maria Sanchez Recuero of the Florida Tech women’s soccer team has been named the Sunshine State Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday.

This is the Madrid, Spain product’s second time receiving the award this season, and is the third of her career.

Sanchez Recuero was impressive behind the backline for the Panthers in their road contest at Rollins last Wednesday as she recorded six saves in a 0-0 draw for her league-best seventh shutout of the season.

She especially came up big for Tech when the Tars were pressing in the second half, registering four of her six saves in that half alone.

The redshirt senior’s great play helped Crimson & Gray become the first team to hold Rollins without a goal in SSC play this season. Additionally, the Panthers were able to extend their streak of holding SSC opponents scoreless to 468 minutes, dating back to the Nova Southeastern game on Oct. 2.

Through 12 starts this season, Sanchez Recuero has only allowed six goals and has 42 saves while facing 118 shots.

She currently leads the SSC in shutouts (7), goals-against average (.455), and saves percentage (.875). She also ranks 10th nationally in goals against average.

Sanchez Recuero and the Panthers continue their hunt to secure an SSC post-season berth when they host No. 16 Palm Beach Atlantic on Wednesday at Rick Stottler Field. The kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
