BREVARD COUNTY • TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA – Mary Jo Shigley (nee Watson) was born February 27, 1928, and died in the presence of family on October 13, 2021. She is known for her bright smile, warm heart, and kind soul—and perfectly manicured nails. Mary Jo was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years Donald (2011) and close friend Curtice Martin (2017).
She and Don raised two children, son Stephen (Sarah) and daughter Susie (Jeff), both of whom gave her the grandchildren she loved so dearly, Lisa, Kathy (Jimmy), and Angela (Michael). Mary Jo’s Great Grandchildren Taylor, Isaac, Abby, and Mason adored her.
Her extended family included Patrick (Kimberly), Quinn, William, Jackson, and Priya as well as Megan and Riley Cowan. When it came to spending time with her loved ones, she always had time to play games, swim in the pool or just listen.
Mary Jo was born in Washington Courthouse, Ohio. She and her husband Don moved to Littleton, Colorado in 1959 for Don to pursue an engineering career with Martin Marietta. They later moved to Titusville, Florida in 1972, where Don’s career led him to work on the Skylab space station.
This is where Mary Jo built a life and reputation around being the light of friends’ lives, the backbone in any situation, and the glue the held her family together. Mary Jo was a secretary and worked at Jackson Middle School, UCF, and then spent many years with NASA in the Procurement office.
She had a servant’s heart and after she retired, she volunteered at both Head Start and Meals on Wheels. She loved being near the water, whether it was her swimming pool, condo at New Smyrna Beach, or the annual trip to Captiva Island. She had many friends and was always happy to catch up with loved ones over lunch or shopping.
She loved clothes and had multiple closets filled with matching outfits and accessories. She always looked beautiful.
Words can’t express how much she will be missed. A Celebration of Life will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, October 22nd at the Great Outdoors Community Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Candlelighters of Brevard, or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital are appreciated. Online condolences may be left on Mary Jo’s guest book at North Brevard Funeral Home.
