BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – At 6-foot- 9, Saturn Elementary School Resource Deputy Colin Kearns is a giant of a man and a great cop, but what’s even bigger is his heart and desire to get to kids before they get to us.

As Sheriff, I quickly realized that one of the greatest resources we have as an agency is the position of School Resource Deputy.

While their primary assignment may be to protect the school from active shooters and other critical incidents, their ability to connect and build relationships with kids is paramount in helping steer our next generation of parents, community leaders, heroes and champions.

Several years ago, the late Deputy Adrian Moss-Beasley showed me the true value of School Resource Deputies, when we posted on our facebook page of his passing after a courageous battle with cancer.

Of all the things that Adrian had done in his career as a Law Enforcement Officer the thousands of comments that flooded our page were from former students, teachers, administrators and parents from the school where he served as a School Resource Deputy.

They spoke of his many examples of compassion such as eating lunch with those who were alone, standing in for those missing a parent, the security he provided in critical times and the encouragement he offered others.

According to Saturn Elementary School Principal Kori Hurst, Deputy Kearns brings the same sense of peace to her school as he daily has lunch with the kids, rescues a family pet that followed their child to school, provides compassion and security at all levels and as you can see even helps teach the kids life skills.

I could not be more proud of our School Resource Deputies for all they do to impact and forever change the live’s of the children they protect each and every day as they make a difference in our community!
