BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Florida Tech Panthers women’s soccer team advance to the Sunshine State Conference semifinals after defeating Nova Southeastern 1-0 on Monday.

It didn’t take long for Florida Tech to strike first as Marem Ndiongue collected a cross from Mayara Queiroz Reis in the box and scored on a no-look shot over her head that trickled into the back of the net to put the Panthers up 1-0 in the 10th minute.

Panthers controlled momentum the remainder of the first half, as they outshot the Sharks 10-3.

NSU came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, holding the ball on the Panthers’ defensive half for much of the final 45 minutes. The Sharks had an 8-1 edge in shots in the second half and a 4-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.

Despite the Shark’s offensive efforts, Maria Sanchez Recuero and the Panther defense turned away every attempt. Sanchez Recuero finished with seven saves in the game, including several acrobatic stops on shots right in front of the net to keep the Panthers ahead.

Queiroz Reis led Tech with six shots in the game with two on goal, while Ndiongue placed two of her four shots on goal, including the eventual game-winner.

COACHES CORNER:

“The girls were great tonight, they played with high energy from the start, and we were able to get in front by a great goal from Marem (Ndiongue),” said head coach Ryan Moon.

“Credit to Nova as they made it very difficult for us in the second half, but a strong-willed defensive display meant we were able to protect our goal and hold out. We are excited for Thursday and will be rested and raring to go.”

Florida Tech earns its first SSC Tournament win since 2017 when the Panthers defeated Tampa in penalty kicks (4-2) in the SSC championship game.

UP NEXT: Florida Tech advances to the SSC Tournament semifinals against No. 2 seed Palm Beach Atlantic on Thursday, Nov. 11. The contest will take place at the PBA Soccer Field in West Palm Beach, Fla. Kickoff is at 4:30 p.m.
