BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – The Melbourne High Bulldogs are set to host one of the biggest matchups in school history Friday night when they face off against Lake Gibson in the Class 7A State Regional Final on Space Coast Daily TV.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.

Mel-High earned one of the most impressive wins by a Brevard County team in recent memory when they beat the previously undefeated Martin County 36-7 on the road.

The news even got better Friday night when the Bulldogs were notified they would host the Regional Final after the Lake Gibson Braves (8-3) knocked off No. 1 seed Clearwater 32-14 in a shocking upset, clearing the way for Melbourne to host the regional final game on Friday night.

The last Bulldog state football championship in football was in 1966 when they were a Class 2A school. In 1990, the Bulldogs reached the regional final.

Should Melbourne win, they would play the winner of the No. 1 Buchholz  vs. No. 7 Nease in the Class 7A state semifinal.

Last week, QB Hunter Turner threw for 257 yards and 2 touchdowns. Turner also added one rushing touchdown in the historic win over the Tigers. (MHS Image)

Bulldogs quarterback Hunter Turner has lit up the stat sheet this season and is considered one of the front runners for offensive player of the year on the Space Coast.

A junior, Turner has amassed 2,433 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and 5 interceptions on the season, and his completion percentage is 61 percent.

The rushing attack for Melbourne starts with running back Michael Galvin. Galvin, a senior, has rushed for 1,121 yards and 14 touchdowns. He is averaging 4.5 per carry. One of the best wide receivers on the Space Coast is Melbourne wide receiver Devin Alves. Through 12 games, Alves has reeled in 1,200 yards through the air and 15 touchdowns.

Alves, a 6-foot-4 and 190-pound senior, is proving to be one of the best wide receivers in the state of Florida with his dynamic playmaking ability and tendency to make the big play in games this year.

Last week, Alves had 4 receptions for 150 yards and two touchdowns in the 36-7 win over then-undefeated Martin County.

Defensively, the Bulldogs are led by Gavin Rowell, Marqueil Ford-Watson and Jafari Clarke who each have over 100 tackles on the year.

Rowell also leads the team in sacks (13) and tackles for loss (29).
