Unattended cooking is by far the leading factor in cooking fires on holidays

WATCH: Did you know that cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries? And that Thanksgiving is the leading day for fires involving cooking equipment? With that in mind, Palm Bay Fire Rescue Lieutenant John Ringle took time out to provided some Thanksgiving safety tips.

BREVARD COUNTY • PALM BAY, FLORIDA – Did you know that cooking is the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries? And that Thanksgiving is the leading day for fires involving cooking equipment?

With that in mind, Palm Bay Fire Rescue Lieutenant John Ringle took time out to provided some Thanksgiving safety tips.

Palm Bay Fire Rescue wants to make sure anyone choosing to fry a turkey on Thanksgiving knows how to do it safely, so take a look at these tips.

Thanksgiving is the peak day for home cooking fires with more than three times the daily average for such incidents. Christmas Day and Christmas Eve ranked second and third, with both having nearly twice the daily average.

In 2019, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 1,400 home cooking fires on Thanksgiving, the peak day for such fires. Unattended cooking was by far the leading contributing factor in cooking fires and fire deaths.

Cooking caused half of all reported home fires and more than two of every five  home fire injuries, and it is the second leading cause of home fire deaths in 2015-2019.
