Eau Gallie High School Students Share Important Feedback with School Leaders and Peers

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Students at Eau Gallie High School had the opportunity to participate in an exciting Student Voice activity recently.

This activity involves students visiting classrooms to observe the actions and communication between students and teachers. Once students are selected, they are trained on the activity’s objective, and what to look for as they move throughout the classrooms.

They observe student and teacher engagement before, during, and at the end of class. More specifically, they analyze behaviors such as greetings at the door, relationship building, respectful communication, guided learning with scaffolding, asking for help, and more.

When the observation period is over, they meet back together as a group to debrief. Then, they create a presentation to share with the teachers in an open discussion.

Finally, they go back to classrooms and present to their peers. The students were excited to have Superintendent Dr. Mark Mullins present for the presentation back to the teachers and the roundtable discussion.

EGHS Principal Jeremy Salmon says that this activity is a “very powerful process” and something they have done for years.

“It takes a lot of trust on the teachers’ and the students’ parts to make this a positive experience for all our stakeholders,” said Salmon.

“I knew this was something we were going to continue during the first time we did it when a veteran teacher made a comment back to a student during the discussion, I appreciate the observations made, but tell me what I can do to be a better teacher.”
