Merritt Island Mustangs Lose to Miami Central Rockets 49-14 in the Class 5A State Championship

AUDIO REWIND: The Merritt Island Mustangs faced the Miami Central Rockets in the Class 5A State Championship game at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.
BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA – The Merritt Island Mustangs lose 49-14 to the Miami Central Rockets in the Class 5A State Championship game at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Friday afternoon.
The Mustangs (12-1) enter the Class 5A State Championship on a 9-game win streak after defeating Sebring 12-10 in the state Semifinal game.
Quarterback Brady Denaburg had the game-winning field goal in the final seconds of the game to give the Merritt Island Mustangs their first state championship berth in over 40 years.
This season, Denaburg has had a breakout season accumulating 2972 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. Running back Dominic Shields leads the team in rushing with 744 rushing yards and 8 total touchdowns.
Merritt Island’s defense has been superb all season long led by Maddox Moss, Aaron Sessions, and Jacob Woods. This season the Mustangs have had 5 shutouts and have outscored their last four opponents by a total of 103-16.
In the state semifinals, Aaron Session led the team in sacks (2) and Julius Bennett reeled in 2 interceptions in the 12-10 win over Sebring.
Tonight, the Mustangs will face their toughest challenge yet, facing a Miami Central team who is no stranger to State Championship games.
Miami Central (11-2) is coming into this game having won seven State Championships in the last 11 seasons.
The Rockets, are a very well-balanced team, averaging nearly 300 yards of offense and putting up an average of 25 points per game. Defensively, Miami Central is notorious for getting after the quarterback averaging nearly 7 sacks a game.
Talent-wise, Miami Central is a football factory consistently developing top-notch talent. Some notable players to come out of Miami Central include Dalvin Cook, Devonta Freeman, and Willis McGahee to name a few.
