Melbourne Police Conduct St. Johns Parkway Detail Operation to Reduce Speeding-Related Crashes in November

BREVARD COUNTY • MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – During multiple dates in November, members of the Melbourne Police Department were assigned to an operation to enforce speeding and other identified traffic violations in the area of the St. Johns Heritage Parkway within the City of Melbourne.

The operation was enforced between the times of 6 a.m. through 9:30 p.m. on the following dates:

• November 2 – November 4
• November 8 – November 11
• November 16 – November 18
• November 23 – November 24
• November 30

Assigned traffic officers utilized strict and selective enforcement to identify careless and aggressive vehicle operators committing speeding and improper passing violations.

As speeding is one of the major causes of crashes, deaths, and injuries on the County’s roadways, highly visible and well-publicized enforcement efforts focused on these identified crash-producing violators.

The primary goal of this detail was to reduce speeding-related crashes, injuries, and deaths.

Complaints have been received from local homeowners, department employees, and social media posts in reference to a multitude of moving violations being committed on this roadway.

Identified violations included dump trucks speeding and dropping debris on the roadway, improper passing, and careless driving.

The majority of the speeding citations issued were in the morning with inclement weather observed to include “foggy” road conditions. The speed limit on this stretch of roadway is 45 MPH and the highest cited speed was 78 MPH.
