BREVARD COUNTY • PORT CANAVERAL, FLORIDA – Staten Island’s brand new hi-tech ferry, ‘Sandy Ground’, arrived at Port Canaveral, joining Royal Caribbean International’s Independence of the Seas at a berth next door.

The Sandy Ground was manufactured at the Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Inc. in the Florida panhandle, and is making the trek up the eastern seaboard, bound for NYC.

It is the second of three ferries being built for the NYC Department of Transportation. It’s scheduled to begin transporting passengers in 2022.

The Sandy Ground is named after one of America’s first African American settlements, established by freed slaves on Staten Island’s South Shore nearly two hundred years ago, which became the anchor for African Americans living on Staten Island. The side entrances to the ferry are boarded up for transport.
