BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – Cocoa Police Department announce the passing of Code Enforcement Officer and U.S. Coast Guard veteran Steven J. Murdick who passed away on Jan. 29.

Murdick joined the Cocoa Police Department in March 2016, serving as a code enforcement officer. Prior to joining CPD, he served in the United States Coast Guard for more than 26 years before retiring in August 2017.

He retired as a Machinery Technician 1st Class. He held qualifications as a boarding officer, engineer, boat crewman, watchstander, and machine gunner on small boat platforms.

Murdick was assigned to space transportation systems security for the space shuttle program which provided waterborne security for launches, conducted anti-terrorism boards, fishery boardings, and search and rescue work.

He deployed for two years after the attacks of September 11, 2001. He served during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, G-8 Summits, and spent one year in the Middle East on Camp Patriot with Port Security Unit 307 and Navy MSRON 4 providing waterside support at ports in the North Arabian Sea and the Persian Gulf.

He was attached to the Coast Guard Cutter Drummond, a 110-foot patrol boat based at Port Canaveral. He was recently named Cocoa Police Department Employee of the 2nd Quarter 2021.

“Steve had a heart for service and was very dedicated to doing his job and doing it well,” said Chief Evander Collier IV.

“He was extremely popular and loved by many. He will be missed greatly.”

■ North Brevard Funeral Home, 1450 Norwood Avenue, Titusville on Wednesday, Feb. 2, 5-7 p.m.

■ Funeral Mass at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 2309 Holder Road, Mims on Thursday, Feb. 3 at 4:30 p.m., with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall.

■ Escort and Interment from North Brevard Funeral Home to Cape Canaveral National Cemetery, Friday, Feb. 4. Must arrive at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery at 8:45 a.m. for interment at 9 a.m.
