BREVARD COUNTY • MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA – The Edgewood varsity girls soccer team has had a season to remember so far in 2021-2022, having gone undefeated, a perfect 15-0 overall record through regular season play.
If that wasn’t enough, they have also claimed their first piece of hardware for the season by winning the Cape Coast Conference championship in a thrilling 2-1 victory over Viera .
The Red Wolves are now bound for their district tournament ranked No. 2 in the state at Class 3A.
Coach Eddie Al-Shihabi, in his first year as the girls’ head coach after a long career coaching the boys’ team, has brought his aggressive pass-and-move philosophy to the squad, along with a new offensive mindset that shines through clearly in the field of play.
The team is also having a lot fun scoring goals this year after having outscored their opposition by a combined 55-9 this year.
What’s even more remarkable about this team is its youthful make-up.
While there is plenty of senior leadership and guidance from returning seniors like Andrea Mueller and Ana Garcia, the leading scorers Gianna Lopez (freshman), Piper Miller (sophomore), and Andrea Toledo (sophomore) show this squad is going to be threat for years to come.
Nina Lopez, a sophomore, plays with her sister Gianna and is the squad’s leading playmaker with 12 assists.
Riley Rigginbach, a freshman, anchors the backline. Stephanie Burke, who has given up only 4 goals all season, is only a junior.
There’s a bright future ahead of this team, but the future is also right now.
Edgewood takes on West Shore (13-4) tomorrow night in the District Tournament. Game is set for 6 p.m.
