Arctic Game Week: May 2022

By  //  March 14, 2022

The pandemic caused many events to be canceled in 2020 and 2021. While purely online services (e.g., slots online) were not affected much, almost every event held in the real world was postponed to the next year hoping that the situation would improve.

This was also true for Arctic Week, which has been held for 10 years: this event, which is among the largest Nordic entertainment industry organizations, could not be held for the last two years due to COVID-19.

But now the pandemic is largely under control and almost every organization that has been postponed is poised to return in 2022. This includes Artic Week: From 25 to 28 May 2022, this event will be held again in Sweden. In this article, we talk about everything you need to know about Arctic Game Week.

What is Arctic Game Week?

You can think of Arctic Game Week as a meeting where transmedia businesses, namely the film and game industries, come together. Intellectual properties are at the heart of the organization, that is, the connections needed to turn a movie into a game, for example, are established at this event. Therefore, most of the organization is spent with industry conferences, investor meetups, and networking. In addition, events such as masterclasses, investor workshops, game student recruitment, and B2B parties are also featured.

In addition to all these, the Nordsken Convention will be held during the Arctic Game Week. This is the biggest gaming event in Scandinavian countries and has been held for the past 10 years.

The only exception to this was the years 2020 and 2021, as we mentioned above. Nordsken is as important an event as E3 in the United States because almost all European-based game developers are promoting their soon-to-be-released games here.

Arctic Game Week is organized by Arctic Game. This is the name of a Sweden-based organization that aims to bring together investors and game developers. Arctic Game partners include the municipalities of Umeå, Skellefteå, Piteå, Luleå, and Boden.

The organization includes around 75 game studios and 500 developers. Bonnier, Rabén & Sjögren, B. Wahlströms, Wanderword, Global Top Round, Goodbye Kansas, Film i Västerbotten, Turborilla, and Heroic Signatures are among the sponsors of the event.

This year’s event will be held at Skellefteå Kraft Arena in Skellefteå, Sweden. Around 1,000 people are expected to attend the event, and these include names like Peter Zetterberg, Agnes Larsson, Fredrik Malmberg Lloyd Levin, Tam 17, Vladislav Tsypljak, Agnes Våhlund, and Johan Egerkrans. You actually know most of these names: Lloyd Levin, for example, is the producer of the movies Predator, Hellboy, and Watchmen. Agnes Larsson is the game director at Mojang studios, which developed Minecraft.

The Swedish Championship for Cosplay will also be held during Arctic Game Week, and the event will conclude with a classical music concert. The concert is given by Sabina Zweiacker and includes music from both movies and games. In other words, you will be able to listen to the soundtrack of legendary productions such as The Witcher, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings.

Program of the Event

May 25: The event starts. There will be two conferences about game development and film & VFX. There will also be a gala dinner, followed by a matchmaking B2B meeting.

May 26: Nordsken starts. The day will continue with another matchmaking B2B meeting. There will be a VIP party afterward.

May 27: The second day of Nordsken. There will be a cosplay event (for the Swedish championship) and a game pitch event. You can join another matchmaking B2B meeting and finish the day with an evening concert (a classical concert that will feature the game & movie music).

May 28: The third and last day of Nordsken. There will be an afterparty that everyone can join.

Please note that this program is subject to change and most likely, more content will be added. You can see the full program of the event from the Arctic Game Week website and its mobile apps (for iOS and Android). If you plan on going to the event, make sure to check the up-to-date program using one of these options.
